Healing Diet
A healing diet, is comprised of nutrient-rich ingredients from the earth that can be fully digested to allow for proper absorption. There is no exact formula, rather a healing diet is based on general theories of good health and personalized to individual needs. Different nutrients are found in different foods so a healing diet must include a variety of nutrient sources that are properly prepared to supply the body with the tools it needs.
But a healing diet is not just foods that heal. It is also eliminating the foods that are holding your body back from healing itself. Foods that cause inflammation, digestive distress, headaches or allergic response need to be eliminated in order for the natural healing process to occur. It doesn't matter if you are healing from a sports injury, autoimmune disease or depression, your body will make much faster and stronger improvements if you remove the barriers and supply the tools for healing.
We are learning more and more about the impact of inflammation on different body systems. As someone with an autoimmune disease, inflammation is my main chronic enemy. Certain foods, stress, lack of sleep and toxins cause the body to enact its defense mechanism of inflammation. In many cases, this is a healthy response (like a fever to kill off infection) but our society has triggered excessive inflammation that speeds up the onset of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, celiac and multiple sclerosis.
Sugar (of any kind), alcohol, processed foods especially oils cause inflammation. Properly prepared vegetables and fruit plus high quality fat and animal protein reduce inflammation. There is a tremendous amount of confusing nutritional advice exists out there on the internet, in our grocery stores and restaurants, but the general rules are simple: Eat lots of plants, high quality fats and protein and the rest is up to the individual to find what food and habits work best for you.
After lots of experimentation with my own health, I have found what foods leave me feeling energized, fueled and bloat-free and I have discovered foods that don't work for my body.
I eat gluten-free, soy-free, corn-free, dairy-free, nightshade-free, cashew-free but I eat flavor-FULL and nutrient-FULL.
People always ask me about what I cannot eat and let me tell ya, the list can get long. But I choose to focus on the foods that I can eat because that list is even longer.
I eat veggies at every meal, focus on high quality ingredients and ensure that I am using enough fat to cook my veggies to feel satiated.
I am here to help you figure out how to eat foods that heal your body but also satisfy your tastebuds and leave you feeling full. If you haven't already, sign up here for my Source Course to learn how to find healing ingredients and keep an eye out for my cooking class to learn how to cook them.
